The break-even is lower than people assume
An annual multi-trip policy typically costs between two and three single-trip premiums for the same region. If you take three or more trips a year, the annual plan almost always wins — and it wins before you count the convenience of not buying cover under time pressure each time.
The limit that catches people out
Annual policies cap the length of each individual trip, commonly at 30, 45 or 90 days. The annual total is unlimited, but a single 60-day trip on a 45-day plan is uninsured from day 46. Check this figure against your longest planned trip, not your average one.
What is usually included
- Emergency medical treatment and hospitalisation abroad
- Medical repatriation and return of remains
- Trip cancellation and curtailment, within stated causes
- Baggage delay and loss, with per-item limits
- Personal liability while travelling
Where it does not fit
If your travel is concentrated in one long trip a year, or if you need cover for winter sports or a country with an active advisory, a single-trip policy written for that specific journey will usually cover you better than a generic annual plan.
