Schengen visa insurance: what embassies actually check

Consulates reject applications over insurance details more often than travellers expect. Four fields decide whether yours passes.

Schengen visa insurance: what embassies actually check

The four fields that matter

Consulate staff are not reading your policy in full. They are checking four specific things on the certificate, and any one of them can send the file back.

  • Coverage amount: at least €30,000 in medical expenses
  • Territory: valid in all Schengen states, not just the country you are visiting
  • Repatriation: medical repatriation and return of remains explicitly included
  • Dates: covering the entire requested stay, ideally with a few days' margin either side

The mistake that causes most rejections

Buying cover for the travel dates rather than the visa dates. If you apply for a 30-day visa but insure only the 12 days you plan to be there, the file is incomplete. Insure the visa window.

Multi-entry visas

If you are applying for a one-year or multi-year multi-entry visa, an annual multi-trip policy is usually the cheaper route, and it satisfies the requirement for the whole validity period rather than a single trip.
