1. Contents
The building policy your landlord holds covers the structure. Your furniture, electronics, clothing and appliances are not in it. A modest two-bedroom apartment typically holds AED 60,000 to AED 120,000 of replaceable contents.
2. Liability to neighbours
If a leak from your unit damages the apartment below, the claim lands on you. Personal liability cover is inexpensive and is the single most valuable line in a householder's policy for a flat-dweller.
3. Water damage from your own appliances
Washing machine hoses and water heater tanks fail. The resulting damage to flooring, cabinetry and neighbouring units is a classic uninsured loss.
4. Temporary accommodation
If the unit becomes uninhabitable after a fire or flood, someone has to pay for a hotel while it is repaired. Alternative accommodation cover does exactly that.
5. Valuables away from home
Laptops, cameras, jewellery and watches carried outside the property usually need to be specified. The default contents cover often stops at the front door.
