Maternity cover in the UAE: costs, waiting periods, tips

Maternity cover comes with waiting periods that catch families out. Plan the policy before the pregnancy, not after.

Maternity cover in the UAE: costs, waiting periods, tips

The waiting period is the whole game

Almost every maternity benefit in the UAE carries a waiting period — commonly six to twelve months from the policy start date. Conception before the waiting period ends usually means the pregnancy is treated as pre-existing and the claim is declined. This single clause causes more disappointment than any other in health insurance.

What a standard maternity benefit includes

  • Antenatal consultations and routine scans
  • Normal delivery, with a separate limit for caesarean section
  • A defined post-natal period for mother and newborn
  • Complications of pregnancy, often under a higher limit

Where the out-of-pocket costs appear

Maternity limits are usually annual sub-limits rather than part of the main ceiling. A normal delivery in a mid-tier private hospital in Dubai can exceed a basic plan's sub-limit, and the balance is yours. Check the sub-limit against your chosen hospital's package price, not against the plan's headline annual limit.

Planning it properly

If a pregnancy is on the horizon within the next year, upgrade the plan at the next renewal rather than mid-term. Renewal upgrades restart the waiting clock on the new benefit either way, so starting it as early as possible is what protects you.
