Senior insurance: covering parents who join you in the UAE

Cover for parents on a visit or residence visa is available, priced by age band, and best arranged before they arrive.

Senior insurance: covering parents who join you in the UAE

Two different products

If your parents are on a visit visa, you need visitor medical insurance — short-term, emergency-focused, and priced per month. If you are sponsoring their residence, they need a full resident plan meeting the emirate's mandate, the same as any other dependant.

Age banding is the main cost driver

Premiums step up sharply at 60, then again at 65 and 70. Many insurers cap new entry at 70 or 75, though existing members can usually renew beyond it. If a residence visa is likely within a couple of years, starting the cover earlier locks in continuity that becomes hard to buy later.

What to check carefully

  • Pre-existing condition terms — the decisive clause at this age
  • Chronic medication cover and its annual cap
  • Whether the network includes a hospital near where they will live
  • Repatriation benefit, which many families overlook
  • Any exclusion for treatment in the home country

The practical sequence

Arrange cover to start on the arrival date, not the visa issue date, and declare every known condition at application. A declined claim six months in is far more expensive than the loading you avoided at the start.
