Comprehensive vs third-party: which motor cover fits you?

Third-party is the legal minimum. Comprehensive covers your own car too. The right answer depends on your car's value, not your budget alone.

Comprehensive vs third-party: which motor cover fits you?

What third-party actually pays

Third-party liability is compulsory across the UAE. It pays for injury and damage you cause to other people and their property. It pays nothing towards your own vehicle. If you hit a wall, the repair is yours.

What comprehensive adds

  • Repair of your own vehicle after a fault accident
  • Fire, theft and, on most plans, natural perils
  • Agency repair, if your car is within the agency-repair age window
  • Optional add-ons: roadside assistance, replacement car, personal accident

A simple rule of thumb

Take your car's current market value. If losing it outright would seriously disrupt your finances, insure it comprehensively. If the car is old enough that a total loss would cost less than three years of the premium difference, third-party plus a repair fund is usually the rational choice.

The middle ground people miss

Comprehensive with a higher voluntary excess sits between the two. You keep full cover for the events that would actually hurt, and you accept the small repairs yourself in exchange for a materially lower premium.
