Declare everything, always
The strongest protection you have is a complete declaration at application. An undeclared condition gives the insurer grounds to decline related claims later — and in serious cases to void the policy. A declared condition, even one that carries a waiting period, is a claim you will eventually be able to make.
How insurers treat it
- Covered after a waiting period — commonly six months on mandatory plans
- Covered with a sub-limit — the condition is included but capped
- Specific exclusion — that condition is named and excluded
- Loaded premium — full cover at a higher price
What mandatory plans must include
Under Dubai's mandatory scheme, chronic conditions and pre-existing conditions must be covered after the declared waiting period on plans issued to meet the legal requirement. This is a meaningful protection, and it is one many residents do not realise they have.
At renewal
A condition that first appeared while you were insured is not pre-existing at renewal with the same insurer — continuity of cover matters. Switching insurers can reset that, which is the main reason to think carefully before moving a policy that has an active chronic claim on it.
